06/04/21 APPREHENDING LOVE, WHICH APPREHENDED ME
Driving forces in our lives, such as, duty, honor, fear, desire, acceptance, need, love, are all legitimate but love for God (and for other people) should be paramount for Christians. In fact, Jesus instructed us to love with perfect love, the very same quality of love, which God has for us. When asked which was the greatest commandment, Jesus said the first is to love God with all of our whole self, and second, to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.
Here are some other Biblical thoughts concerning God's directive, command, requirement to love God and others. (This is an abbreviated list). I designate the specific verse with an asterisk *.
OLD TESTAMENT
Exodus 20:4-6 (In His brief comment about the second commandment, God said,)
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
* 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (known as the "shema")
